Domenica 2 settembre 2012 ore 18.00: una serata da ricordare per la comunità di Acquappesa e particolarmente per gli abitanti di contrada San Iorio.
Il vescovo di San Marco Argentano – Scalea monsignor Leonardo Bonanno ha benedetto la tanto attesa nuova chiesetta “Mater viatorum”, voluta fortemente dai cittadini della contrada in memoria di Erika, la dolce ragazzina deceduta improvvisamente l’otto settembre 2008.
Insieme con la Chiesa è stata benedetta la grande sala che si trova al piano terra.
Alla celebrazione d’inaugurazione erano presenti, oltre al vescovo, i sacerdoti don Ermanno, don Lillino, don Massimo, don Antony, don Giovanni, don Dante, il parroco don Giacomo e il cerimoniere del vescovo don Sergio Ponzo. Presenti anche il sindaco molti amministratoti e le forze dell’ordine.
Il luogo di preghiera fa parte dell’unica parrocchia “Santa Maria del Rifugio” che comprende anche il centro storico con la Chiesa Madre e la Chiesa Sacro Cuore di Gesù nella frazione marina. (vedi foto)

ACQUAPPESA: IL VESCOVO BONANNO BENEDICE LA NUOVA CHIESA “MATER VIATORUM”
Evento straordinario e giornata di festa ad Acquappesa, dove il vescovo di San Marco Argentano-Scalea Monsignor Leonardo Bonanno ha benedetto una nuova Chiesa e una grande sala.
Situate rispettivamente al piano superiore e al piano terra, Chiesa e sala fanno parte di un’unica struttura di proprietà dell’amministrazione comunale, trasformata in “centro sociale” e data in comodato d’uso all’associazione “Erika Tripicchio” nata per tenere viva la memoria di una ragazza della contrada, appunto Erika, scomparsa prematuramente all’età di dodici anni.
Si realizza così un sogno durato quattro anni: San Iorio, piccola contrada di Acquappesa distante dal centro storico, ha finalmente un luogo di aggregazione e soprattutto la “sua chiesa”, dedicata alla Madonna sotto il titolo di “Mater viatorum” (Madre dei pellegrini).
La scelta di questo titolo fa riferimento – ha spiegato il parroco Giacomo Minervino – a un’icona della Madonna con Bambino del 1500 restaurata da poco e collocata nella nuova chiesa. Nella scritta, deturpata dal tempo, che si trova alla base dell’icona è ancora visibile la parola “viator..”, che attesterebbe la collocazione iniziale dell’affresco all’interno di un’edicola votiva posta all’incrocio di quattro sentieri a protezione dei pellegrini.
La solenne liturgia d’inaugurazione, diretta dal cerimoniere vescovile don Sergio Ponzo e presieduta dal vescovo con la presenza di altri otto sacerdoti, si è svolta nel pomeriggio di domenica due settembre tra l’entusiasmo degli abitanti della contrada del centro storico e della marina.
Alla Celebrazione Eucaristica erano presenti il sindaco della località termale e molti amministratori municipali.
Dopo il saluto di benvenuto del parroco al vescovo alle autorità e ai fedeli, monsignor Bonanno nell’omelia ha apprezzato lo sforzo congiunto dell’amministrazione comunale e dei cittadini del luogo che ha permesso la nascita, in una piccola contrada, di un’interessante struttura capace di soddisfare i bisogni di socializzazione e quelli dello spirito. Ha invitato inoltre a riscoprire e “utilizzare” la chiesa come luogo di ascolto di Dio.
Terminata la parte liturgica, il professor Fabrizio Mollo, archeologo e docente universitario, ha parlato delle antiche origini e dell’interesse archeologico della zona rurale di San Iorio mentre il restauratore dottor Antonio Adduci si è soffermato sulla tecnica adoperata per il recupero dell’icona e sul valore artistico e documentale.
Un ricco buffet ha concluso una giornata veramente speciale per tutti gli abitanti di Acquappesa.
