CON LE MANI ALZATE VERSO IL CIELO, SOSTENIAMOCI RECIPROCAMENTE NELLA PREGHIERA
Tra i tanti ostacoli che il popolo d’Israele incontra nel suo faticoso cammino verso la Terra Promessa, il libro dell’Esodo racconta l’agguato subito dagli amaleciti (Es 17, 8-13).
Israele non avrebbe mai potuto vincere contro un popolo spietato, esperto nell’arte della guerra.
Mosè, senza perdersi d’animo e fiducioso in un intervento di Dio, dopo aver spinto Giosuè ad andare in battaglia contro Amalek, sale sul monte per ritirarsi in preghiera.
Una preghiera che diventa decisiva per l’esito della battaglia: “Quando Mosè alzava le mani, Israele prevaleva; ma quando le lasciava cadere, prevaleva Amalèk. Poiché Mosè sentiva pesare le mani, presero una pietra, la collocarono sotto di lui ed egli vi si sedette, mentre Aronne e Cur, uno da una parte e l’altro dall’altra, sostenevano le sue mani. Così le sue mani rimasero ferme fino al tramonto del sole. Giosuè sconfisse Amalèk e il suo popolo” (Es 17, 11-13).
Il testo dell’Esodo suggerisce due riflessioni:
1. Mosè, sebbene stanco, insiste nella preghiera e Israele ottiene un’impossibile vittoria. Un particolare che deve spingerci, in questa impari lotta contro un virus insidioso, a insistere testardamente nella preghiera, fiduciosi che Dio interverrà;
2. Aronne e Cur sostengono le mani di Mosè, perché rimangano alzate nella preghiera di supplica e, così, consentano al popolo di prevalere sul campo di battaglia. L’atteggiamento di Aronne e Cur insegna che nella lotta contro le forze del male non possiamo agire da soli, ma abbiamo bisogno di sostenerci reciprocamente nella preghiera, perché il Signore ci ascolti.
Rileggendo questo brano dell’Esodo mi è venuta davanti l’immagine di Papa Francesco che prega, da solo, davanti al Crocifisso nella chiesa di San Marcello al Corso, per la fine della pandemia.
Sosteniamo, con la nostra preghiera, le mani stanche e affaticate di questo grande e umile nuovo condottiero della chiesa, che continua incessantemente a invocare la protezione di Dio sul mondo intero.
Le sue e le nostre braccia alzate verso il cielo sono decisive perché, ancora una volta, il Signore risparmi il suo popolo da una strage.
